This guide helps you inspect a kit before ordering. Work through the footprint, headroom, fixture dimensions, ventilation connections and controls, then compare the actual contents. A kit is a parts list, not a climate guarantee

A grow tent kit groups equipment into one purchase. Read the contents for the selected option: the photograph may show accessories that are sold separately, and another option on the same page may include a different light or controller.

Keep the attraction of a kit in perspective. A well-specified bundle can reduce the work of choosing compatible parts. It still needs a suitable room, a practical installation and adjustment during use. You should be able to explain how the components work together without relying on the word “complete”.

Start with the room, then test the kit

Measure the space with the door open. Include the skirting board, nearby furniture and any obstruction that narrows the usable floor area. Check the route into the room as well as the final position.

Mark the proposed tent footprint on the floor with tape. Stand where you would water, inspect a rear plant, remove a drainage tray or replace the filter. A tent that fits only when everything around it is moved may be inconvenient every day.

Work through a headroom budget

The tent height is not the height available for the plant. Draw a side view showing the container and tray, mature canopy, required lamp clearance, fixture thickness and hanging hardware. Include the fan and filter where they occupy the same space.

Try this deliberately simple example: a 200 cm internal height, a 35 cm container-and-tray allowance, 15 cm for the fixture and hangers, and 40 cm lamp-to-canopy clearance leave 110 cm for plant height above the container. The calculation is 200 − 35 − 15 − 40 = 110 cm.

The assumed 40 cm is not a recommended distance for your light. Replace it with the exact fixture's instructions and check the PPFD map at that height. If the filter intrudes below the assumed equipment allowance, the available plant space becomes smaller again.

Ask how you will raise the lamp near the end of the crop. If the adjustment ropes, cable or duct stop it moving, the theoretical clearance is of little help. Moving a fan or filter outside the tent may free space where the equipment instructions permit; it also changes the duct route and room-space requirement. Trace the air from intake to outlet

Draw the air route on the same sketch. Identify where replacement air enters the room, how it enters the tent, where it passes through the filter and fan, and where it finally leaves. A circulation fan moves air within the tent; it does not provide an exhaust route by itself.

Fan performance changes once ducting and a filter are attached. Bends and restrictive components can reduce delivered airflow, so a free-air maximum alone is not a complete sizing check. Empty tent volume is useful context, but it does not account for lamp heat, room conditions or the resistance of the installed system. Ask whether the proposed fan-and-filter combination has enough adjustment for your room. A very long or cramped duct route may need to be redesigned before the answer becomes clear. Keep filter replacement and duct removal accessible.

Check pressure without promising odour elimination

Check that the intended exhaust passes through the filter and that the connections are sealed. Follow the filter's operating and replacement guidance. Do not choose a kit on an unsupported promise that its fabric or carbon filter removes every smell under every condition.

Check the room under working conditions

Before putting a crop into the tent, run the installed equipment according to its instructions and log the room and canopy conditions. Check a warm part of the day and the period when the lamp is off. Listen for vibration and make sure the duct cannot collapse or discharge straight back into the intake area.

A closed garage in summer and a ventilated spare room can present very different conditions. Measure your own space. There is no reliable fixed temperature difference to add to every South African room, and a kit cannot establish a suitable climate independently of its intake air.

If your supply is interrupted, check what the timer, light and fan do when power returns. Base any backup plan on the actual equipment load and its instructions. Keep power connections clear of watering and drainage, and have unsuitable electrical arrangements corrected before use.

Check the structure and the dark period

Look for a removable tray and access that allows cleaning between crops. Check for light leaks around zips and ports if the crop requires an uninterrupted dark period. Follow the crop's actual photoperiod requirements rather than treating one flowering schedule as a rule for all plants. Avoid closing an intake just to hide a light leak without considering the effect on airflow. Resolve light control and ventilation together.
