High power LED grow light coverage is the area a fixture can light under stated test conditions. A wattage label or a bright centre reading does not establish how evenly light reaches that area. Before comparing products, ask for a coverage map that identifies the fixture, footprint, measurement height, dimmer setting and test environment. Then look at the edges as carefully as the middle.

For a South African buyer comparing local stock with imported equipment, this turns a vague coverage promise into something you can question. This guide explains the measurements, the gaps to look for in a report and the information to request before paying for a fixture. It also separates coverage from spectrum, efficiency and service-life claims, which need their own evidence.

Ask what the coverage claim means

“Covers a large area” leaves the important part unanswered: what was measured across that area? A photograph shows the installation. A wattage figure describes electrical input, if it is the actual input rating. Neither supplies a distribution map.

Start by asking the supplier to define the claim. Is the stated footprint the area included in a test, a suggested installation area or the outside dimensions of the fixture? Was the map measured, calculated or simply illustrated? A simulation can be useful, but it should be labelled and tied to a documented fixture model and layout.

Keep the footprint in metres and square metres throughout your comparison. If you are still deciding on an enclosure, use the grow tent size guide to establish the physical space first. That is a separate decision from whether a particular light has adequate evidence for its coverage claim.

Read the conditions before comparing the numbers

A useful report lets you understand what produced the result. Use this checklist when two listings appear to offer similar coverage.

Missing information is a reason to ask for clarification, not proof that a fixture performs badly. Keep any comparison provisional until the suppliers have described equivalent conditions. Do not turn the report's measurement height into an installation instruction; use the instructions for the actual equipment.

Separate output, coverage and efficiency

Three terms answer different questions. PPF, or photosynthetic photon flux, describes the photon output of a source within the stated PAR measurement band, in micromoles per second. PPFD, or photosynthetic photon flux density, describes photon flux per unit area in micromoles per square metre per second. A PPFD map therefore adds spatial information that a single PPF figure lacks. These definitions appear in the DesignLights Consortium terminology reference.

PPE, or photosynthetic photon efficacy, divides PPF by electrical input power and is expressed in micromoles per joule. It is an efficiency measure, not a coverage measurement. Check that the quoted value applies to the complete fixture and stated operating condition, rather than only a component. See the DLC definition of PPE.

This distinction helps when a listing leads with a high wattage or an impressive diode specification. Ask for the complete fixture's output, input and distribution evidence. Look beyond the average

An average can conceal a bright centre and much lower readings around the boundary. Request the point-by-point map as well as the average, minimum and maximum over the same stated footprint.

Consider this deliberately simplified example. Both reports below have an average normalised to an index of 100. These are invented comparison values, not PPFD readings, product tests or growing targets.

Report B has the higher minimum-to-average ratio in this example. That says something about the weakest reported point relative to the average. It does not tell you which fixture delivers more light, uses less electricity or suits a particular crop. A ratio alone also cannot show the position or extent of a poorly lit patch.

Check which uniformity formula the supplier uses. A minimum-to-average ratio and a minimum-to-maximum ratio are different calculations. Request the original grid if a report gives only a colour image with no readable scale. Avoid declaring a universal pass mark without a defined application and specification.

Does the map describe one fixture or a complete installation?

A room layout and a single-fixture test answer different questions. Ask how many fixtures were included, how they were arranged and whether the reported result includes neighbouring light sources. If supplementary lighting was operating during the test, it belongs in the equipment list.

Optics matter as well as the source. LEDs are directional, and fixture design can direct and control their output; the DOE's LED basics guide explains this distinction. Check that the optic or reflector in the report matches the product offered. Do not assume that an accessory change leaves the original map applicable.

For a larger installation, request a layout-specific proposal with its assumptions visible. Keep the quoted quantity, layout drawing and coverage report together so that a later substitution is easy to spot.

Spectrum and coverage answer different questions

A spectrum describes the wavelengths represented in the light. A coverage map describes spatial measurements. A “full spectrum” label does not replace that map, and the map alone does not establish spectral suitability for every plant.

Check the measurement band when comparing reports. Conventional PAR measurements cover 400–700 nm; extended PAR measurements can cover 400–750 nm. Apogee's quantum sensor documentation distinguishes these bands and the relevant instruments. Values reported across different bands should not be treated as directly equivalent without an explanation of the method.

Ask for the spectrum and coverage evidence separately. This is particularly useful when a product listing combines several technical terms in one headline but supplies only a photograph underneath it.

LED drivers, HID ballasts and fluorescent systems

An LED driver and a discharge-lamp ballast are different control equipment. LED fixtures use drivers; HID lamps, including metal-halide and high-pressure sodium types, and fluorescent systems use ballasts. The DOE's explanation of lighting control and flicker distinguishes these systems.

This matters when comparing an LED fixture with an older lighting installation. Identify the complete system being evaluated, including its control gear and optics. Do not carry an old lamp-and-reflector coverage table across to a new LED product simply because their electrical ratings look similar.

Nor should a general comparison be read as permission to interchange lamps, ballasts, drivers or controllers. Use the documented components and compatibility information for the actual model.

Check the controls as part of the report

Ask whether the report covers the operating setting you intend to specify. If you need dimming, request the supported controller, dimming method and available test information at the relevant setting. A percentage printed beside a dial is not, by itself, a measured electrical-input or photon-output result.

Driver and dimmer compatibility can affect output behaviour, as the DOE's control-system discussion explains. Treat compatibility as a documented equipment requirement. Avoid inferring a fixed energy saving, extra output or longer lamp life from the presence of a control knob.

Heat and service life need separate evidence

LED fixtures produce heat. Heat sinks carry heat away from the LEDs and release it into the surroundings; thermal management affects performance and useful life. ENERGY STAR's explanation of LED lighting describes this process. A claim that a grow light produces no heat should be corrected before it becomes part of a buying decision.

A coverage map is also not a lifetime test. Ask for the rated operating conditions, warranty wording and repair arrangements separately. Distinguish an output-maintenance claim from a promise that every component will remain operational for that period. Avoid applying one advertised lifetime to an entire category of equipment.

What to ask a South African supplier

Send a short request that keeps the evidence and the quotation connected:

Please provide the coverage report for the exact fixture and configuration quoted, including the footprint, grid readings, measurement height, operating setting, electrical input and test environment. Please identify whether the report is measured or simulated, and confirm the controller compatibility, local warranty contact and replacement-part arrangements.

For local stock and direct imports alike, record the model on the quotation and who handles a fault in South Africa. Ask whether a replacement driver or optic would require a different report. These are questions for the seller, not assumptions about the service included.
